Peter Mills

Current Career

Advisor, mentor, and former venture capitalist

Description

Peter Mills is a longtime technology executive, investor, and advisor whose career spans some of the most important waves of innovation in modern tech—from early computing and semiconductors to the rise of the internet and venture capital. Across multiple decades, Mills operated alongside many of the defining leaders and companies of their eras, helping organizations navigate periods of rapid growth, transformation, and disruption.
After earning his MBA from Columbia Business School, Mills began his career at Ford Motor Company in manufacturing before moving to Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) during its explosive growth years. At Ford, he learned the discipline and rigor of long-term operational planning. At DEC, he experienced the fast-moving culture of an early technology powerhouse led by legendary founder Ken Olsen. These contrasting environments helped shape his leadership philosophy and approach to building organizations.
Mills later joined Sematech, the groundbreaking public-private semiconductor consortium created to restore America’s competitiveness in chip manufacturing. There, he worked closely with semiconductor pioneer and Intel co-founder Bob Noyce—the last executive Noyce personally hired before his passing. Sharing workspace and collaborating directly with one of the foundational figures in Silicon Valley profoundly influenced Mills’ views on leadership, humility, and innovation.
In the early days of the internet, Mills became a founding partner at CMGI @Ventures, one of the first internet-focused venture capital firms. The firm achieved some of the strongest returns of the dot-com era and backed companies at the forefront of the internet revolution. Throughout his investing career, Mills became known for his operational mindset, hands-on approach, and ability to help entrepreneurs build lasting value rather than chase short-term outcomes.
What distinguishes Mills is his perspective on leadership and success. He consistently emphasizes humility, transparency, and long-term value creation over ego or personal status. Rather than seeking to be the center of attention, he focused on building teams, mentoring founders, and helping others succeed. Over time, that mindset evolved naturally into a second chapter centered on advising, mentoring, and supporting entrepreneurs as they navigate their own journeys.
Today, Mills continues to mentor founders, review business plans, and advise entrepreneurs across industries. His philosophy is simple: productive days matter. Whether building companies, investing in innovation, or helping the next generation of builders, he believes a meaningful life is one centered around contribution, curiosity, and creating value for others.
